Abitibi-Consolidated is a global leader in newsprint, uncoated groundwood papers and lumber with ownership interests in 29 paper mills in Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and Asia (including its one-third interest in Pan Asia Paper Co.) and in 22 sawmills, 2 remanufacturing facilities and a market pulp mill.

The Company annually markets 6.4 million metric tonnes of newsprint, 1.8 million metric tonnes of value-added papers, 2.3 billion board feet of lumber and 444,000 metric tonnes of high-quality market pulp. Since 1989, investments of about $500 million CAD have been spent for a new paper machine, a deinking plant, a thermomechanical pulp plant, a secondary effluent treatment system, and a chip handling system.
Old newspapers and magazines are used to produce recycled-content newsprint.
The pulp mill at Thunder Bay is a large, modern mill with two pulp dryers.
All pulp produced at Thunder Bay is elemental chlorine free.

Kimberly Clark Inc., Longlac The Kimberly-Clark industry operates its woodlands division out of Longlac, employing 412 people in the region. The operation is totally mechanical using machinery such as feller bunchers. The hardwood and softwood harvested from this timberland supplies Kimberly-Clark's bleached pulp mill in Terrace Bay.
